Clarion

Clarion
Soft Velocity produces Clarion, a RAD software development platform for Windows. Clarion fanatics have taken it a lot further than it's original designers had intended and have it producing Perl, VB and even Cobol has been reported. Mostly misunderstood and confused with either a car stereo or a hotel chain, Clarion is really two languages in one. There is the very logical and powerful Clarion source language. This language has all of the simplicity of Basic mixed with all of the data access power of a full fledged relational database tool.

Then, there is the second language, the template language. This powerful scripting language is the heart of the application generator. A well heeled Clarion programmer, using his templates, can produce a fully functional working database consisting of, say three files, with associated browses and update screens, in about the same amount of time that most other programmers will consume on their average coffee break.

This leaves much more time for beer, betting on the Sunday game and trying to get a Saturday night connection with the cute little thing at the front desk.

That's a lot to like in a language.

Icetips
Icetips is one of the oldest and most venerable of all of the Clarion sites. Hosted by Arnor Baldvinson and his Texas lady, Sue Pichotta, Icetips has long been the central repository for code, examples and resources related to Clarion and programming in general. I still remember the original Icetips which featured photo's of Arnor's cows. Arnor has now left the frozen North Atlantic and resides in Texas where it's much warmer. But Icetips continues in the excellent tradition, just without the cows.

Clarion Connection
Tom Ruby's Clarion Connection is an extensive listing of things related to Clarion. Be patient while it's loading. It's a big page, but well worth the wait. It is updated frequently. The date on the image is the date the site was last updated.

Clarion Magazine
Clarion Magazine is an online magazine that is one of the best resources for the Clarion language. Dave Harms, editor, has created a class resource that is timely, knowledgable and full of information useful to both the newcomer and the old hand.

Graphics

Paint Shop Pro

Paint Shop Pro has all of the features the high end packages such as Photoshop has, but a very reasonable price. The only feature that Photoshop has over Paint Shop Pro is PMS color matching, which is needed in printshop situations. But if it's web graphics or software graphics you are after, go for Paint Shop Pro instead. Paint Shop Pro uses the same plug in filters as Photoshop, Microsoft Image Composer, or the rest of the mainstream image manipulation packages. There are many fine filter collections on the web.

Blade Pro

Blade Pro, by Flaming Pear Software , is one of the most useful tools for creating 3D effects with any image.

Writing

Rough Draft
Rough Draft , by Richard Salsbury, is a word processor for writers. Now, a writer can use any old word processor to write, but Rough Draft is designed to work the way a writer works. It's not a page layout wizard or a manual publisher. It's for just laying down the storyline. One of it's neatest features is keeping a separate text file of notes right along with the document you are writing. That way you can note down things that need to be developed more, or jot down the random plot twist as it occurs to you, and in such a way that it doesn't appear in the body of the story!

It also handles two different scripting formats for playwrights. But best of all? It's completely free.

Mind Manager
Mind Manager is a freeform brainstorming tool that works very well from the keyboard alone. You never have to take your eyes from the patterns as you build them on the screen, everything can be easily done from the keyboard. Mindmanager is a visual tool that helps you to organize fantastically complex concepts. On the ouput side, it will render your concept as an HTML website, an RTF document, or a simple text outline. Cool tool!
